Your Spring Pontoon Checklist Before Launch Day

Back to Shop Journal

Every spring, we see the same pattern: boats come out of storage looking fine at a glance, and then someone steps onto the deck and feels it flex. By the time a deck is soft enough to notice standing on it, the plywood underneath has usually been breaking down for a season or two already.

Before you launch this year, walk your pontoon through this checklist. Ten minutes now can save you a haul-out mid-season.

1. Check the deck for soft spots

Walk the full deck slowly, paying extra attention near the bow, the transom, and anywhere water tends to pool. Any flex, sponginess, or give under your weight means moisture has gotten into the plywood. Once that starts, it doesn't reverse itself — it's a matter of when, not if, a re-decking is needed.

2. Look at the seams in your woven vinyl or carpet

Lifting seams, curling edges, or discoloration along the flooring seams usually means water has been getting underneath. This is worth catching early since it protects the plywood decking below from the same soft-spot problem above.

3. Inspect seating for cracked stitching and UV damage

Michigan sun is harder on marine vinyl than most people expect. Check stitching lines for cracking, and press on foam cushions to see if they've broken down and gone flat or lumpy. Repairing a seam now is a lot less than a full seat rebuild later.

4. Check your travel or mooring cover for wear

If your cover has been protecting the boat all winter, look for stress points at the snaps, seams, and support poles. A small tear left alone tends to grow fast once it's back in the wind on the water.

5. Test the fencing and rails

Give the rails and fence panels a firm shake. Loose hardware is a quick fix now, and an easy thing to overlook once you're focused on getting the boat wet for the first trip of the season.

If your deck already flexes underfoot, that's not a maintenance job anymore — that's a re-decking conversation.

A full deck-up overhaul means stripping to the aluminum logs, installing 7-ply CCA marine plywood, and finishing with commercial woven vinyl built to resist hooks, UV, and mold. If that's where your boat is at, we'd rather you find out from us in April than from a soft spot in July.
